How often should you wash your hair? No time to spare?

How often someone washes their hair will largely depend on their personal habits/rituals, hair type and lifestyle.

If you have very oily hair you might want to wash once a day or once every second day. People with curly hair might like to wash 2 times a week. We find that men might wash their hair quite often, but many men don't like to use conditioner. In fact, Kerastase factored this in with their men's range and their men's shampoo does a great job at conditioning as well, for this reason.

So the short answer is: no two people are the same, and you can’t compare to the person sitting next to you in the office, nor judge them when they tell you they only wash their hair once a fortnight.

However...many people tell us that they would like to wash their hair more often but they don’t have time.

Correct me if I am wrong and I’m about to get a little detailed about our days, but we make the time to go to the bathroom, have a shower, stay hydrated, eat breakfast, get snacks, stop for lunch, and sit down and have dinner, oh and get dressed in the morning, get undressed at night, clean our teeth, do some exercise and use our face products and style our hair. Do we really not have the time? Or do we not make the space?

We also find that people are not washing their hair very often because of outmoded beliefs or myths around hair washing... if this is the case for you, it could be time to bust some of those myths up.

Myth: Washing your hair gets rid of the ‘good oils’.

Washing your hair (with a quality product) actually adds hydration to the hair. I once did some damage to my hair with colouring my hair. I wanted to repair it fast and I found the more I washed my hair the more I repaired my hair. Using the right products I nourished the hair daily and it was back to amazing within a week.

We also occasionally have people come to us because they have had a bad colour experience at another hairdresser. One of the worst cases was a woman who had too much lightening and her hair was literally breaking off in her hands. We provided her a ritual to rejuvenate her hair. We started with a hydration serum for the scalp and included repairing shampoos and nourishing treatments. She carried out the ritual every day religiously. When she came in 6 weeks later she couldn’t believe that her hair was actually the healthiest it has ever been.

The key takeaway? If you are washing your hair with care, attentiveness and a quality product you actually can’t wash it too much. Ever had ‘too much’ love in your life? Since when was more care for yourself and your hair a problem?

Myth: ‘I don’t sweat or I don’t exercise so my hair doesn’t get dirty’ or ‘I work in an office all day so my hair doesn’t get dirty’.

Look at your furniture in the light. Particularly dark glossy wood furniture and you will see that every day it attracts a greater film of dust. Yes, this happens. Even to the furniture in your office that doesn’t sweat 😊.

Myth: Curly haired people shouldn’t wash their hair too often as the curls will get too dry

For curly hair the focus for high quality products like Kerastase is hydration. I have never met a person with curly hair that didn’t need some hydration, as curls are naturally drier. But, they do need hydration that doesn’t leave their hair flat and heavy.

Curl Manifesto in the Kerastase range, has been designed specifically for this purpose. Shampoo, when it is as hydrating as Kerastase's is does not leave the hair dry, in fact it hydrates and cleans it at the same time. The conditioner seals and adds the shine and curls have more life and vibrancy.

Myth: My hair won't have any volume if it is 'too clean'

If you find that your clean hair ‘feels too clean’ and loses body because it has less build up of oils, newsflash, you don’t have to rely on old scalp oils as your styling product 😊. You can have clean hair and have body by using a texturiser after you wash it. Talk to our team about the products that will suit your hair and style.

But I pose the question, do the reasons that follow, make washing your hair sound a little more appealing? Not just for you, but the person who lies next to you at night, or maybe its your local running buddy, whoever is in close proximity.

  • You feel fresh when you get out of the shower, having fresh hair can be super invigorating for the scalp.

  • When we think of how often we wash our skin every day, or multiple times in a day, and how clean that area is.  This too we can do for our scalp – which is skin… In our everyday life, whether we leave the house or not, our scalps still attract dirt, oil and are left with naturally dead skin cells. Have we got you thinking a little more about fresh scalps supporting healthy luscious locks?

  • Have you ever looked at someone’s hair and wondered why it is shinier and more vibrant.  It is highly likely they’ve just washed their hair, cause it doesn’t have yesterday’s dust on it.

  • Ever had a stressful day, the ritual of washing your hair can be quite calming (unless you are a child getting shampoo in your eyes…we’ve all been there). Using warm water, mixed with amazing hair care products such as Kerastase, you can cleanse the body and ‘wash away the day’ with the simple act of washing your hair.

  • If you are a very ordered person, then washing your hair isn’t usually a chore at all, it’s part of your every day, a supportive ritual which is part of our self-care.

So I ask the question again a little differently, would you like to make space to wash your hair more often, and dive a little deeper into nurturing yourself?

Not one glove fits the all, you get a sense what is best for you and your lifestyle.  If you would like to extend your hair washing rituals, and styling routines, have a chat with one of our friendly team to see where we can take washing your hair from being a chore, to a luxury experience in the space of your own shower.
